Alhaji Haruna Alhassan, the Deputy Managing Director of Metropolitan TV, has won the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bawku Central primaries in the Upper East Region.

Alhaji Haruna is therefore replacing the former NPP candidate for  the area, Adamu Dramani Sakande who was recently jailed on three counts of deceit of a public officer, perjury and false declaration.

He is currently serving a jail term of two years for the criminal offences. The primary was one of three held by the NPP after constituency primaries were postponed in Bekwai, Nkwakaw and Bawku Central for various reasons.

Alhaji Haruna Alhassan won by 287 votes beating three other candidates - Gabiana Agbanwa Abugi, who had 133 votes and Mohammed Tahiru Nambe.

In the other primary held in Nkwakaw in the Eastern Region, a result that looked like a repeat of what happened in 2008 saw the current MP, Seth Adjei Baah, losing to the NPP’s Eastern Regional treasurer, Eric Kwakye Daffour.

Hon.  Baah, popularly called Shaaba, after losing the primaries in 2008 went on to stand as an independent candidate, beating the NPP candidate. Shaaba managed to poll 26 votes while the victor won by 192 votes.

It is however not clear if Hon Baah will stand as an independent candidate again.
